Is the COVID Vaccine Safe For My Hearing?

With the new COVID-19 vaccines, you may have concerns about the side effects. This includes ones that affect your hearing. Is there a connection between hearing loss and the vaccination? The short answer is no. This is the determination from the initial results from a recent study.

Why the Reason for the Concerns about Hearing Loss?

Johns Hopkins researchers looked into available and relevant data for the study. They discovered 40 reports of sudden hearing loss after one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Almost 150 reports of this issue were in people after they received both doses of these vaccines. For this reason, they needed a more detailed analysis of a vaccine connection.

What about a Possible COVID Vaccine Connection?

Johns Hopkins Medicine looked at the link between sensorineural hearing loss and the vaccine. Sensorineural hearing loss results from inner ear damage. It can also come from damage to the nerve that sends hearing signals to the brain. It's a permanent type of hearing loss that has many causes. This includes an association with more than 200 medications and vaccines.

The main link was between SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID, and sudden hearing loss. Researchers found that there is no evidence the COVID vaccine led to sudden hearing loss. This comes after looking at reports of patients from late-2020 through early 2021. The reports of adverse vaccine reactions came from the CDC's national database. This database is also known as the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS).

Sudden hearing loss can have many causes. So, researchers noted that vaccine-related hearing issues may be a coincidence. This is why the team only looked at hearing-related issues within a certain time frame. They focused on incidents three weeks after subjects received the vaccine.

More Research Is Coming

Early findings of the study suggest no clear link between the vaccine and hearing loss. But, researchers say they need to conduct more studies. In fact, researchers hope to conduct more studies soon. The goal is to further explore the vaccination-related connection. The patients with hearing problems received oral or injected steroid treatment.
