How Do Hearing Aids Work?

All hearing aids have three main parts: the amplifier, microphone, and speaker. When working together, these parts help produce clear sound at a comfortable volume for you to better hear the world around you.

Beltone hearing aids have evolved in a way that has allowed their functionality to grow. At the same time, the size shrinks for your comfort and convenience.

Hearing Aid Styles

There are varying styles of hearing aids. They all partially sit within the ear, but some have no protruding part for increased discreteness.

Behind the Ear

Behind-the-Ear (BTE)

BTEs are the classic hearing aid style. They have an earmold that sits inside and a curved casing that sits behind the ear. The parts connect via clear tubing.

Receiver In Ear

Receiver-in-Ear (RIE)

RIEs are a newer and more popular style of BTE hearing aids. The receiver in ear casing is typically smaller and more discreet than traditional BTEs.

Mic in Helix

Mic-in-Helix (MIH)

An MIH is custom-made based on an impression of your ear canal for maximum comfort. Only the microphone is external and sits behind the ear.

In the Ear

In-The-Ear (ITE)

ITEs are also custom hearing aids made from an impression of the ear canal. Part of the hearing aid is visible in the outer ear, but no part sits behind the ear.

In the Canal

In-The-Canal (ITC)

ITCs are a little smaller than ITEs. They're similarly custom made but with a smaller part of the hearing aid being visible in the outer ear.

Completely in Canal

Completely-In-Canal (CIC)

CICs are even smaller than ITCs. They're not very noticeable because the hearing aid is worn entirely within the ear canal.

Invisible in Canal

Invisible-In-Canal (IIC)

IICs are ideal for those who want a hearing aid that isn't detectable. These are the smallest hearing aids that are only about the size of a berry. They typically can't be seen.

Choosing the Right Hearing Aid

The right hearing aid choice is very dependent on your lifestyle and personal needs. BTEs and custom hearing aids tend to be the most popular choices as these are the most comfortable. BTEs are the most easily programmable, which makes them very user-friendly.

If you're unsure which hearing aid will be the best for you, speak with your Beltone hearing care specialist to further compare how different hearing aids would benefit your lifestyle. In-office demos are available to help you make the decision as well.
